CATO INSTITUTE SCHOLAR ADDRESSES HEALTH CARE REFORM AT NORTHWEST INDIANA EVENT
Valparaiso Law School Libertarians Host Guest Lecturer Michael Tanner
VALPARAISO, IN -- The Libertarian Club of the Valparaiso Law School will host a public lecture on health care policy and reform in the U.S., featuring CATO Institute scholar Michael Tanner.
The lecture will be April 7th in the Community Room at the Christopher Center Library on the university's main campus. The lecture will begin at 8:15 (CT). The lecture is open to the public.
America offers the highest quality health care in the world. If you are sick, this is the place you want to be. But there are problems – lots of
them: millions of Americans lack health insurance; both patients and providers need better and more useful information; the system is riddled with waste; and the quality of care is exceptionally uneven.
A leading national figure in transforming health care financing, Mike Tanner provides unparalleled insight into the complexities of health care economics. Tanner’s presentation starts with a fascinating look at national health care and the dangers of socialized medicine, addressing, for example, how universal insurance coverage does not mean universal access to care; how health care rationing occurs directly or indirectly in every national health care system and how national health care systems are rarely less costly yet deliver poorer quality care. Tanner then focuses on consumer-directed health care and on how to increase quality while reducing cost. Key to this, Tanner outlines health savings accounts. One of the newest innovations in consumer-directed health care, they provide consumers greater control over how their health care dollars are spent and are now is use by more than three million Americans. Tanner details how they are setting the stage for transforming our health care system from a massive, convoluted, bloated process into an efficient, effective consumer-driven system.
About the presenter: Michael Tanner
As director of Cato's health and welfare studies, Michael Tanner heads research on new, market-based approaches to health, welfare and Social Security. His approach is based on individual responsibility rather than government control. His most recent book, Leviathan on the Right: How Big-Government Conservatism Brought Down the Republican Revolution (2007), chronicles the demise of the Republican party as it has shifted away from its limited government roots and warns that reform is necessary to avoid electoral defeat in 2008.
Under Tanner's direction, Cato launched the Project on Social Security Choice, which is widely considered the leading impetus for transforming the soon-to-be-bankrupt system into a private savings program. Time Magazine calls Tanner, "one of the architects of the private accounts movement," and Congressional Quarterly named him one of the nation's five most influential experts on Social Security. In addition to his work on Social Security, Tanner oversees Cato's research on new, market-based approaches to health care reform and social welfare programs.
His other books include, Healthy Competition: What's Holding Back Health Care and How to Free It (2005), The Poverty of Welfare: Helping Others in Civil Society (2003), and A New Deal for Social Security (1998). Tanner's writings have appeared in nearly every major American newspaper, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today. A prolific writer and frequent guest lecturer, Tanner appears regularly on network and cable news programs. Before joining Cato in 1993, Tanner served as director of research of the Georgia Public Policy Foundation and as legislative director for the American Legislative Exchange Council."
