Somebody is Really Sensitive About Libertarians Out There

A friend of mine just emailed me the following: "Garrison, on The Greg Garrison Show, WIBC [93.1 FM, Indianapolis], this morning referred to Bob Barr and the Libertarians as having no effect in November, referring to them as just 'noise' and 'tin foil hats'."

This strikes me as a very nervous and defensive response. I wonder if yesterday's Republican loss in the Mississippi Congressional District special election had anything to do with this vitriolic, defensive and inappropriate comment.

Me thinks some people are really nervous about the presidential election this year.

Mark, they are so afraid to let go of their status quo government. I still can't figure out what gives them so much fear.

You would think more folks would have great fear by now of getting the same old Congress, Senate, and Presidency they've always got. Public approval is at an all time low of both the president and congress.

Bob Barr is exciting. I'm looking forward to learning more about him.

SW Airlines is running $69 one way tickets to Denver for those going to the national convention.

It was hilarious for me to be at a reception last week for economist Walter Williams, for who is there but Garrison. There's Williams, the radical for capitalism and *all* things laissez faire, explaining that freedom means "you own yourself". There was Garrison nodding in ironic eager approval- the same Garrison who promoted SJR-7, that anti-you own yourself bile, so vigorously so recently.

The man wouldn't know liberty if it kicked his ass. This, of course, helps explain why he adores the Republican Party so- because they wouldn't know liberty if it kicked them in the ass, either.

Bob Barr authored DOMA — the Defense of Marriage Act — in 1996. It was hailed by conservatives and hated by militant gay activists.

Oddly, Barr says the recent court decision in California that effectively legalizes gay marriages demonstrates the intent of DOMA: To allow states, not the fed, to make their own decisions.

Here is the text of Barr's press release:

Bob Barr, former Member of Congress from Georgia and current candidate for President for the Libertarian Party, today issued the following statement in reaction to today's decision by the California Supreme Court allowing for the recognition of same sex marriage in that state:

"Regardless of whether one supports or opposes same sex marriage, the decision to recognize such unions or not ought to be a power each state exercises on its own, rather than imposition of a one-size-fits-all mandate by the federal government (as would be required by a Federal Marriage Amendment which has been previously proposed and considered by the Congress). The decision today by the Supreme Court of California properly reflects this fundamental principle of federalism on which our nation was founded.

"Indeed, the primary reason for which I authored the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 was to ensure that each state remained free to determine for its citizens the basis on which marriage would be recognized within its borders, and not be forced to adopt a definition of marriage contrary to its views by another state. The decision in California is an illustration of how this principle of states' powers should work."

Unfortunately, militant gay activists within the party view Barr as somewhat of a homophobe, certainly not a fair characterization.

The gay group OutRight Libertarians is openly opposing Barr's nomination and the noxious blog, freestudents.blogspot.com, outright call him "an anti-gay bigot."

Hopefully moderate gays within the LP will take the lead and avert more unnecessary division within the party.

Supporting civil liberties for all — including gays — does not necessitate embracing the anti-libertarian aspects of the militant gay agenda.
