Last Friday, Capt. Don Heichel gave the main address at the Veteran's Day Ceremony at the Civic Auditorium in LaPorte.
It is a major event in LaPorte, with a few hundred school kids bussed in as well as a lot of retired veterans and other citizens in attendance. All of the local politicians, including State Representative Budak and Congressman Chocola, were in attendance. Chocola gave a short speech and mentioned that he was in Afghanistan to visit while Don was there but did not get a chance to meet him.
Don proudly wore his Libertarian Party of Indiana 1994 Society pin on the front of the hat he wore. Although he did not get the word "Libertarian" into his address, his presence and speech was a VERY positive example of the type of people in the Libertarian Party of Indiana.
Don has run for office as a Libertarian in LaPorte (before his National Guard unit was activated and sent to Afghanistan). He also served as Secretary of the Libertarian Party of Indiana from 2001 to 2003.
